Karimnagar is one of the major feeder cities for the Sammakka Saralamma Jatara. Located about 150 km from Medaram, the journey takes pilgrims through Warangal — the ancient Kakatiya capital and the most convenient hub for transport connections to the Mulugu forest. Whether you travel by government bus, hired minibus, or private car, Karimnagar devotees typically start their journey before dawn on Day 2 or Day 3 of the Jatara to avoid peak-hour crowd surges on the narrow forest road.
Karimnagar district is home to a large Koya and Lambada tribal population, many of whom have ancestral ties to the Medaram pilgrimage. During the Jatara season, the Karimnagar bus station buzzes with organized groups, temple committees, and devotional associations arranging group transport to the jatara. If you are travelling alone, joining one of these organized groups is the most economical and safe option.
By Bus — TSRTC Jatara Specials
TSRTC operates direct Jatara special buses from Karimnagar Central Bus Station to Medaram during the festival period. These are seasonal services added specifically for the pilgrimage, running around the clock on all four days of the Jatara.
During Jatara (4 days): Direct buses from Karimnagar TSRTC Bus Station → Medaram. Check the departure board or TSRTC enquiry counter for the latest schedule — timings change annually.
Regular (year-round): Take any Hyderabad-bound or Warangal-bound bus from Karimnagar (every 20–30 minutes, ₹80–120, ~1.5 hrs). From Warangal, TSRTC specials run directly to Medaram during the Jatara.
Group travel: Many Karimnagar pilgrims book private minibuses through their colony's temple committee — typically 17-seater or 26-seater vehicles. Cost splits down to ₹350–600 per head for the round trip, making it cheaper than individual bus tickets when sharing.
By Car or Cab
The most flexible option for families and small groups. The road to Medaram from Karimnagar passes through excellent highway stretches before narrowing into forest terrain near Mulugu.
Primary route: Karimnagar → Huzurabad → Warangal Bypass → Narsampet → Mulugu → Tadvai → Medaram
Road condition: 4-lane NH-163 until Warangal; good 2-lane state highway Warangal to Mulugu; last 30 km is a narrow winding forest road that becomes very congested during peak Jatara days.
Fuel: Multiple filling stations along the highway up to Mulugu. Fill up at Mulugu — the last reliable fuel point before Medaram. No fuel stations inside the forest zone.
Bypass tip: Use the Warangal Outer Ring Road to bypass the city centre — saves 30–45 minutes versus going through urban Warangal.
Parking: Government-designated parking zones along the Tadvai-Medaram stretch. Vehicles are not permitted beyond the designated parking areas during the Jatara. Plan a 1–2 km walk to the main gadde area.
Toll: One toll plaza on the route (approximately ₹80–120 one way).
By Train + Bus
Step 1 — Karimnagar to Warangal: Karimnagar station (code: KMNR) has limited direct trains to Warangal Junction (WL). Express buses to Warangal are more frequent and faster (₹80–120, 1.5 hrs). Use the Karimnagar–Warangal bus for the first leg unless you have a confirmed train ticket.
Step 2 — Warangal to Medaram: During Jatara, TSRTC special buses depart from Warangal Bus Station every 1–2 hours (90 km, ~2.5 hrs, ₹80–120). Book a seat early — buses fill up very quickly on Day 2 and Day 3.
Alternative: Many pilgrims take a train from Karimnagar to Kazipet Junction (adjacent to Warangal) and then board Medaram-bound Jatara specials. This avoids the city traffic altogether.
Where to Stay
Karimnagar
Stay the night before the Jatara and start by 3–4 AM. Budget hotels near the bus stand: Hotel Srinivasa, Hotel Rajeswari, Hotel Vijaya. Book well in advance during Jatara season.
Warangal (~80 km from Medaram)
Better hotel range, closer to Medaram. TSTDC Haritha Hotel, Hotel Ratna, Hotel Suprabha. Ideal base for pilgrims doing a full day trip to Medaram.
Medaram (at site)
Government-run temporary shelters during Jatara only. Very basic — carry your own sleeping mat, blanket, and water. Pre-book through the Mulugu District Collectorate portal.

- Start by 3–4 AM from Karimnagar to reach Medaram before the Day 3 morning rush.
- Group minibus hire is the most popular choice among Karimnagar families — a 20-seater costs ₹8,000–12,000 split among the group.
- Carry water (at least 2 litres per person), snacks, and prasad items — jaggery for the Bangaram offering, turmeric, and red cloth — from Karimnagar. Prices at roadside stalls near Medaram are 3–5× higher than usual.
- If driving, use the Warangal Bypass / Outer Ring Road to save 30–45 minutes.
- Many Karimnagar devotees stop at the Sammakka Saralamma Temple in Warangal on the return trip — a smaller but historically significant shrine dedicated to the same goddesses.
- Download Google Maps offline for the Mulugu–Tadvai–Medaram stretch — mobile data can be weak in the forest zone.
- Wear comfortable flat shoes or rubber slippers. The final 1–2 km walk on the jatara grounds is on uneven forest floor.

En Route — Temples and Stops

🏛️ Warangal Fort (Kakatiya Kala Thoranam)
75 km from Karimnagar. The iconic Kakatiya stone gate (Thoranam) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. ~30-minute visit for photos and the historical context of the Kakatiya empire whose taxes sparked Sammakka's revolt.
🛕 Bhadrakali Temple, Warangal
One of the most revered Shakti temples in Telangana, located near Warangal Lake. Many Karimnagar pilgrims offer prayers here on the way to Medaram — connecting the Shaivite goddess tradition with the tribal forest goddess worship.
🌊 Jampanna Vagu, Medaram
The sacred stream at Medaram, named after Sammakka's son Jampanna who drowned here during the battle. A holy dip (snan) in Jampanna Vagu is considered the most spiritually significant act of the Jatara pilgrimage.
