The Accommodation Challenge

Accommodation is the most searched — and most stressful — part of Sammakka Jatara planning. Medaram village has fewer than 300 permanent residents. During the Jatara, over 1.3 crore pilgrims descend on the area over 4 days. There are no permanent hotels at Medaram.

Book the moment 2028 dates are officially announced. Monitor mulugu.telangana.gov.in for announcements. Do not wait — every Jatara year, pilgrims who delay find themselves with no options closer than Hyderabad.

Key rule: For Jatara years, book accommodation 6–12 months in advance. Warangal hotels sell out 2–3 months before the Jatara. Mulugu fills even earlier.

Option 1 — At Medaram (At the Jatara Site)

Very Limited

The government and TSTDC set up temporary tent and camp accommodation during Jatara only. These are basic — mats on the ground, shared facilities, no attached bathrooms. Check medaramjathara.com for 2028 announcements.

Dharamshalas: Religious community groups and charitable organisations set up free or subsidised accommodation near the Gadde. First-come basis — arrive a day early for the best chance. Carry your own bedding, sleeping mat, and water.

Open-air stays: Many pilgrims simply sleep in the open near the Gadde area. This is common, accepted, and part of the community experience. The district administration provides lighting and basic sanitation.

Facilities at Medaram during Jatara: Government water tankers, temporary toilets, medical camps (14+ locations), police presence, mobile charging stations (limited), food stalls operated by community groups and vendors.

Option 2 — Mulugu Town (12 km from Medaram)

Best for Budget Pilgrims

The Mulugu district headquarters is the closest proper town to Medaram. It has a government rest house and several small private lodges.

Government rest house: Book via mulugu.telangana.gov.in — bookings typically open 3 months before each Jatara.

Private lodges: Budget ₹400–800/night. Book by phone — most small properties don't have online booking.

Distance to Gadde: ~12 km. TSRTC shuttle buses run during Jatara. Auto-rickshaws and shared jeeps also available.

Advantages: Close to Medaram, quieter than Warangal, easy early-morning access to the Gadde.

Disadvantages: Very limited options, fills up extremely fast, basic amenities only.

Option 3 — Bhupalpally (~30 km from Medaram)

Alternative Base

Jayashankar Bhupalpally district headquarters. More accommodation than Mulugu, still within comfortable day-trip distance to Medaram.

Hotels: Several budget hotels and lodges. Government rest house available.

Distance: ~30 km from Medaram. Well-connected by road during Jatara.

Best for: Pilgrims who find Mulugu fully booked but want to stay closer than Warangal.

Option 4 — Warangal (90 km from Medaram)

Recommended for Most Pilgrims

Best balance of comfort, availability, and connectivity. Warangal is the closest major city with a full range of hotels, restaurants, ATMs, hospitals, and transport.

Budget (₹500–800/night)

Multiple options near Warangal Bus Stand and Railway Station. Basic rooms, clean, convenient for early-morning departure to Medaram. Hotel Ashoka, Sri Sai Lodge, and others.

Mid-range (₹1,200–2,500/night)

Hanamkonda area. AC rooms, restaurant, decent amenities. Haritha Hotel (TSTDC), Hotel Ratna, Hotel Suprabha. Book 4–6 months ahead.

Premium (₹3,000+/night)

Limited options — Warangal is not a tourist hotspot. Best available are mid-range branded properties. Don't expect 5-star facilities.

Why Warangal works: Leave at 3 AM, reach Medaram by 5 AM, attend Jatara, return to Warangal by evening. A comfortable day trip that avoids the accommodation crunch entirely.

Bonus: Visit Warangal Fort, Thousand Pillar Temple, and Sammakka Saralamma Temple in Warangal on your non-Jatara day.

Option 5 — Hyderabad (260 km)

Maximum comfort, zero booking anxiety. Works well for pilgrims who are physically active and comfortable with a long drive. Leave Hyderabad at 2 AM, attend Jatara, return by late evening.

Best for: NRI pilgrims, those who want city-level comfort, large families who can hire a Tempo Traveller for the group.

Round trip: ~520 km. Fuel + tolls ~₹2,500. Or hire a cab for ₹5,000–8,000 return.

Booking Tips

  • Book the moment dates are announced — typically 3–4 months before the Jatara. Set a Google Alert for "Sammakka Jatara 2028 dates".
  • For small properties in Mulugu: call directly, don't rely on booking apps. Many don't list online.
  • Carry your own bedding for dharamshalas and tent camps — a sleeping bag and thin mat are sufficient.
  • Confirm check-in/check-out terms — some properties impose minimum 2-night stays during Jatara.
  • Water and power supply near Medaram: government-managed during Jatara but carry personal water reserves regardless.
  • For groups of 8+, consider hiring a Tempo Traveller and doing a day trip from Warangal — eliminates accommodation stress entirely.
