Tribal Goddesses of Telangana
Sammakka is the most celebrated, but the tribal Shakti tradition of Telangana encompasses a rich pantheon of powerful female deities — all rooted in animist, non-Brahminic worship. These goddesses share common themes: protection of the vulnerable, resistance to oppression, and deep connections to the land and forest.
🪔 Sammakka
Warrior-goddess, divine infant found among tigers. Central deity of the Medaram Jatara. Disappeared on Chilukalagutta hill — her vermilion casket IS her physical form.
🔴 Sarakka
Sammakka's daughter, married Govinda Raju. Fell in battle at Kannepally. Worshipped as Aderalu (sacred pot) and Bandaru (turmeric-saffron powder). Arrives first at the Jatara.
🛡️ Pochamma
Village guardian goddess of Telangana and AP. Protects against disease and evil. Shrines at every village boundary. Annual Pochamma Jatara celebrated across rural Telangana.
🌾 Yellamma
Fertility and mother goddess (Renuka Yellamma). Worshipped across TS, AP, Karnataka, Maharashtra. Main shrine at Saundatti, Karnataka. Protector of the marginalized.
🏘️ Kattamaisamma
Boundary goddess worshipped in the Hyderabad area. Protects village limits. Similar to Pochamma but specific to urban-fringe communities of Telangana.
🌿 Maisamma
Goddess of agricultural communities. Worshipped for rain, good harvests, and protection of livestock. Small shrines under sacred trees across rural Telangana.
🐍 Nagulamma
Sammakka's sister (some accounts say daughter). Also fell in battle. Deified alongside the Sammakka family. Her insignia is carried from Kondayi village during the Jatara.
